Living Well In addition to pensions, the VA offers veterans a variety of other little-known services.
Free grave markers and burial plots. The VA will cover the cost of a headstone and a burial plot for honorably discharged veterans. Burial sites include state and national cemeteries. That's easily $2,000-$3,000 toward the cost of a funeral. And these services extend to spouses and dependents.
Free tax preparation. Veterans earning less than $53,000 a year can file their taxes for free using the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. And active-duty servicemen and women can use programs like TaxSlayer Military or TurboTax Military edition. You can find all of these programs right here.
Transfer GI Bill credits. Most people are familiar with the GI Bill, which was designed to provide returning servicemen and women with credits for education. But if you qualify for the post-9/11 GI Bill, you can transfer these credits to a spouse or child.
Support. There are a number of organizations around the country that provide support for veterans, including visiting vets in VA hospitals. You can also find help with VA forms and applications, and receive job counseling. Plus, some memberships provide discounts on services like travel and cell phones. The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans all provide great resources.
